Trumpeter and composer Diego Hedez aka Diego Miguel Hernández González was born on February 17, 2000 in Remedios Villa Clara At nine years old Diego began his musical career, studying at the Olga Alonso vocational school where he experimented with various instruments and started his elementary studies in trumpet. By 2012 he won his first competition as a trumpeter and in 2014 he recorded his first solo with the Villa Clara Youth Symphony.

In 2015 Diego was admitted into Cuba’s selective National School of Arts (ENA) where he began developing his professional abilities and exploring his passion for music. He connected with several influential trumpet players during this time, most notably maestro Robert

Garcia, a world-class and emblematic trumpeter of Cuba, who would guide Diego and reveal for him the magic within jazz music, showcasing how to mix contemporary elements with classic styles like bebop and Cuban rumba.This led Diego to develop his own vision as a composer, focused on Afro-Cuban music fused with jazz. He explored this sound through a new ensemble that he directed called Afro Cubanos. He also collaborated with several other bands during this time including the ENA Jazz Band and Joaquín Betancourt’s Joven Jazz Band, performing in significant theaters such as the National Theater of Cuba and the Teatro de Bellas Artes in Havana.

These groups opened a new world for Diego, allowing him to connect and work with some other great players and artists from Cuba and also global artists like Dave Weckl, Brian Lynch , Victor Goines among others.

Diego then connected with renowned jazz trumpeter Kervin Barreto, from the GRAMMY-award winning band Calle 13, and received transformative insight into performing on stage. He took these new learnings and went on to establish a name for himself in the Havana jazz scene, performing alongside first-rate musicians in notable clubs such as La Zorra y el Cuervo and Jazz Café.Diego’s debut album “Distante. ”

The seven-track live studio album was composed by Diego and dedicated to the creation of Latin jazz, maintaining a profound connection with musical expressions from the Caribbean and Latin America. The album featured the Diego Hedez Quintet, made up of Diego on trumpet, Miguel Angel Wiwi on keyboard, Lino Piquero on bass, Miguel Pacifico on congas, and Rey Ponce on drums.

In October 2022 Diego was selected for a free jazz residency in Sutri Italy , small town 35 min of the north of Rome. Diego recorded his last album featuring the acclaimed Cuban-American drummer Francisco Mela , Italian drummer Federico Ughi among other musicians. Early 2023 Hedez moved to New Jersey, USA. He was selected for the SIM summer program based in Brooklyn New York led by the acclaimed trumpet player Ralph Alessi. Diego's musical journey includes collaborations with avant-garde icons like William Parker and Daniel Carter, and performances at notable venues and festivals globally. His recent projects, including "The New Quartet" and collaborations with the William Parker Ensemble, showcase his commitment to pushing musical  boundaries through free improvisation and sonic exploration.
